United for Literacy has partnered with School Plus to offer a FREE in-person after-school EAL Literacy program for both junior high and elementary students which will start from Wednesday, October 22, 2025 until Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The program will run from 3:00-4:30pm at John Martin Junior High. With different bell times at different schools, the program will start when all students get to John Martin. Please note that registration for the program is required.
The after-school program will be made up of 2 groups: one cohort of junior high students and another cohort for elementary students. Each cohort will have a facilitator who will be supported by high school student volunteers/mentors from both Dartmouth High and Woodlawn High.
The junior high program is for grades 6 to 9 and aims to focus on learners' reading and writing skills, provide a safe space for students to work on their EAL/literacy/academic skills, and academic tutoring where needed.
The elementary program is for grades 1 to 5 and will provide focused, meaningful activities to engage students in developing their EAL skills though listening reading, writing and speaking, foster positive learning and developing social-emotional skills, and gain confidence communicating in English and being in a classroom.
We encourage those John Martin students who register to register their younger elementary aged siblings to the program. If students do not have a sibling(s), they are still welcome to register.
If you know of any students/families who may be interested in this program and would like more information, please share the leaflet attached. If any of your students/families need help with registration, you are welcome to share my details and I am happy to help.
This is an exciting opportunity where students can access FREE in-person EAL programs that are located within our community every week excluding the December break from October to May!
